Pope Francis issues a statement that the Blessed Virgin Mary had defects while the Catholic Church declared she was born without the stain of original sin. The Catholic Church teaches that Mother Mary was born without the stain of sin. This declaration was made in 1854 by then current Pope Pius, IX. How else could she serve as Mother of the Word made flesh? Jesus was born sinless. The womb for His birth had to be without defect, without original sin. To insinuate that Mary had defects is another aspect of targeting Jesus as less than Divine.
In Sept 2013, Pope Francis made the following statements at a general audience:
The Church and the Virgin Mary are mothers, both of them; what is said of the Church can be said also of Our Lady and what is said of Our Lady can also be said of the Church! …All mothers have defects, we all have defects, but when we speak of our mother's defects we gloss over them, we love her as she is.
And the Church also has her defects: but we love her just as a mother.1
Then we can compare that to the following statement by
Pope Pius IX, Dec 8, 1854, exCathedra: We declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful.
exCathedra: an infallible Church statement
Luke 1: 35The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.
